INTRO: I wrote this Christian poem after returning from a short mission trip to Bangladesh where I played a small role in helping the students translate their broken English into readable English text. I also taught the students some oldie but goodies Christian choruses like this one titled This is the day that the Lord has made. We had lots of laughs as we helped each other learn the songs in each other’s language. During the morning Sunday service, it was heavenly singing the same hymns together; they in their language and we in English. Beverley Joy
I want to tell you how much God loves you
And how He is so good to you and me
Oh, I want to tell you about God’s worldview
And all the promises He has made to us.
But the words that I speak you don’t understand
And the words that I write are just strokes on the page
Here we stand, face to face
I long to give you God’s Word, you long to take it to your heart.
But we are hindered by a barrier
Of grammar, consonants, and vowels
Yet when I listen, they sound familiar
Just composed and configured differently.
But the words that you speak I don’t understand
And the words that you write are just strokes on the page
Here we stand, face to face
I long to give you God’s Word, you long to take it to your heart.
Word by word we comprehend
The meaning and truth of what is read
Verse by verse we slowly translate
God’s Word into your mother tongue.
One day the words that we speak we will understand
And the words that we write we will recognize on the page
Here we stand, face to face
I start to give you God’s Word; you start to take it to your heart.
With time and prayer, patient endurance
The task complete at last God can speak
Yes, now His message in all its richness
Can speak now directly to your heart.
Now the words that we speak we can understand
And the words that we write we can recognize on the page
Here we stand face to face
I have given you God’s Word; you have received it to your heart.
Now you go to your people
And share God’s Word with them
And then they go and tell others
And it goes on and on and on and on.
And the words that you speak they will understand
And the words that you write they will recognize on the page
There you stand, face to face
You give to them God’s Word; they take it to their heart.
And it goes on and on and on and on and on
Let’s keep it going on and on and on and on
You can help it go on and on and on and on
Yes, it spreads on and on, throughout the world.
