A mask of deception crumbles, exposing the truth.
I wrote this poem many years ago. It depicts the moment when a friend reveals a truth about themselves that comes as a surprise. But as the relationship is solid, both parties realise that truth deepens the bond of friendship. Pride, guilt, and shame fall away with the grace shown. United in love, they leave the past behind. How wonderful it is when friendships pass through this surface-level stage, throw away the masks, and get honest with each other. Beverley Joy
Listen HERE – Poem – Unmask the Truth
You lower the mask of deception and pretence
Your true self revealed before me at last
Before our eyes your mask shatters
The pieces fall in the mud at our feet.
The back of the pieces reveals the adhesive
That held your mask together for so long
The glue of pride, guilt and shame
Masking catastrophe, thrown your way.
Our eyes are fixed on the broken pieces
Of your worldly status crumbled before us
You shared with me your childhood secret
Of trauma and hardship that’s hard to believe.
Our friendship stained from the ‘mud’ of strife
Vulnerability is needed for us to survive
Now that I know why you seemed aloof
I thank you for trusting me with the truth.
“No more pretending, be authentic”
“I forgive you, let’s step out of here.”
With the shattered mask trampled underfoot
We step out of the mire and get on with life.
