Post-surgery experience
This poem describes my post-surgery experience. Discharged with medication and crutches, I found comfort in a treehouse retreat and shared time there with my daughter, who took care of me. I struggled to accept the restrictions on movement the surgery had left me with. My focus shifted to healing and recuperating, emphasising the need for patience and endurance. This poem is Part 7 of a series about my journey with cancer. Beverley Joy
Listen HERE – Poem – Roots of Healing
After surgery, I was discharged
With medication and crutches
I was equipped to go home and recuperate
Then come back for them to radiate.
I cried as I walked through the treehouse
My daughter had searched for and found
To rest and heal in this quiet retreat
Following the chaos of the previous weeks.
Old rustic furniture, stained timber
Every room had a tree-top view
The ocean rumbled in the distance
Trees rustled in the breeze.
But I was tormented by an image
Fixed in my mind
Of me lying on a bed of nails
Piercing up and down my spine.
So, a new vision of my spinal fusion
Was of new roots growing
Then sprouting from my spine
To grow angel wings of hope.
With every ache of stabbing pain
I drew on patience and resilience
Resting in nature’s creative timing
To heal and gain strength and meaning.
