Once I Was Blind, But Now I See

John 9 The blind man who was healed by Jesus

This Christian devotional poem is inspired by the Bible story, in John chapter 9, of the blind man who was healed by Jesus. When the man returned from following Jesus’ instructions to wash, the people who saw him asked him in amazement about his healing. They took him to the Jewish temple to show him to the authorities, who kept questioning him about how and who healed him.

This poem focuses on our spiritual blindness before being spiritually healed by Jesus, and how our colleagues, friends and family recognize and question the change in our behaviour and outlook on life. I wrote this poem while I was a Prison Chaplain and shared it in a prison chapel service as the message was centred on this Bible story. Beverley Joy

Listen HERE – Poem – Once I Was Blind, But Now I See

Ah, I see the truth

Once blinded by lies

Its coloured hue

I now recognize.

The scars on His hands

Now I understand

He died for me

Forgiven I am free.

God’s peace has touched

My wounded eyes

And soothed my pain

With His love and grace.

Friends scoff and pout

“Who are you now?

You’re not the same

Somehow, you’ve changed.”

I grin and sigh “God gave me sight

He raised me up and gave me life

No greater gift could He have given

Then open my eyes to see Jesus Christ.”
