Book Excerpt – The Wilted Rose Part 3 – The Wilted Rose

Grace’s Aunty Hilary, her mother’s younger sister, lived with her husband and two children on the Gold Coast one hour south of Brisbane. For many years they had lived in a big waterfront house right on a canal and now lived in a big house that they built on a large property in the hinterland. Grace loved visiting her aunty there; Hilary was always so gentle and kind, a light amidst the dark and melancholy cloud that had hung over Grace’s teenage years. Hilary never asked her much about life at home, and Grace was happy not to talk about it.

Hilary had invited Grace to come and stay with her and her family for a few weeks over the Christmas holidays. Sitting on the balcony, Grace looked out over the pond in front of the house. The magpies and other birds were busy flitting about in the surrounding gum trees. The screen door creaked, and Grace looked up to see Hilary step outside. She approached Grace, sitting down next to her. She was holding a book in her hands.

‘I know you must have been through a very difficult time with your mother.’

Grace nodded solemnly.

‘Yeah…it’s pretty bad.’

Hilary gave the book to Grace.

‘I’d like you to have this. It is a gift, just for you. It is about healing from life’s difficulties. I hope you find it encouraging.’

Grace took the book, and Hilary hugged her niece, her embrace warm and comforting. She sat back and took Grace’s hand, looking into her eyes.

‘You’re welcome to stay as long as you want to.’

‘Thanks, but I’ve applied for a few jobs in Brisbane, and I’m hoping I’ll get one of them in the New Year.’

 Hilary smiled, squeezing Grace’s hand.

Hilary stood, leaving Grace to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
