Book Excerpt – The Wilted Rose Part 3 – The Wilted Rose

The first letter was waiting for Grace when she and her brothers arrived home. Stepping into her room, she spotted the letter lying on her bed. Dropping her bag on the floor, she snatched it up, tearing it open and pulling out the piece of paper. Sinking down on the edge of the bed, her smile spread across her face as she read. She pressed the letter to her chest, where butterflies flitted around her heart.

On Monday morning Grace floated back to work on cloud nine. With her reply letter to Alex sealed in an envelope, she approached the letterbox outside the inner-city post office. She opened the lid and dropped the envelope in, already anxious for Alex’s reply. As she went through the mundane motions of her workday, he was never far from her mind.

Her weeks revolved around anticipating the next letter, the next phone call. She let lovesickness consume her; it was all a welcome distraction from the routine chaos that continued to unfold at home. As Grace lay awake at night, her mother clamouring around the house, she escaped into her own thoughts, her memories of her time with Alex providing a time travel portal out of her current nightmare.
