Blessed are the Pure in Heart?

Matthew 5:8 The sincerity and obedience of the pure in heart

This poem is based on the sixth of The Beatitudes in Matthew chapter 5 verse 8 ‘Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.‘ This Beatitude has both a physical and spiritual meaning.

The poem emphasises the longing for spiritual fulfilment amidst earthly struggles. It highlights the sincerity and obedience of the pure in heart, echoing the desire for God’s purity and the return to divine harmony. Christians anticipate the coming Messiah and the fulfilment of God’s righteous reign.

On the day when Jesus taught these Beatitudes, he spoke of a future world where the pain and sorrow of this present world will no longer exist Revelation 21:4-5. But Jesus also spoke of an immediate quenching of spiritual hunger and thirst available through faith and trust in God Psalm 107:9.

I interpret this image as our human hearts which are not perfect, are broken from life’s pain, but our hearts are full of God’s rich love bursting out into our world, to our family and friends. First-century Israel lived in a desperate state

Economically and politically under Roman rule

Many lived in poverty living out their faith

Surrounded by Roman religion and culture.

They longed for the fulfilment of the prophecy of old

For a Saviour, a Redeemer, the coming Messiah

And eternal life in the Kingdom of God

To eclipse the peaceful rule of King Solomon.

Some Jews enquired of Jesus about these things

“What shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
